MaryK has a 20+ year background in marketing, but has been an unpredictable artist much of her life. Starting with mixed media at an early age, she’s enjoyed helping bring ideas to visual and verbal form, hers and those that come in collaborative spaces. As a commercial artist, her unique style and voice underwent a sort of fracturing, as she developed her talents into a means of making a living. She has been part of several creative efforts over the past 15 years to raise awareness about and need for environmental and social justice. She is passionate about finding ways to align life energy with purposeful activities and loves to find playful ways to do that.
As part of the EGG, she’s really enjoyed the imaginative and compassionate ways fellow EGG artists, friends, and community members have come together to dream in different directions.
She is the Marketing Manager and serves as Secretary on the Board of Directors for the Snake River Seed Cooperative. In this role, she’s able to devote a fair chunk of her life and time to work that aligns with nature and the abundant potentials of mutually beneficial care—functioning as part of the relationship between seeds, humans, environment, and all life.
New SUM
This year, she continues to build on the insights gained from deconstructing a popular board game about colonization last year with the EGG, crafting a new version inspired by the natural design of a seed head. The current rules of the game are shaped by patterns of play observed in sessions with fellow artists and community members who participated in experimenting with new strategies in their communal space.
The development of the game is guided by caring interactions and playful exchanges that often resemble work, yet are filled with joy. It has evolved into a game that invites further contributions in sessions, whether played individually or in groups.
The game sets out to define goals and challenges and seeks complementary methods for collaborative engagement, inspired by the concept of 7 Generations—a principle deeply rooted in Indigenous Peoples' wisdom concerning resource stewardship, cooperation, and inclusivity.
She is currently creating Zines based on game scenarios that emerge during gameplay. These publications allow her to delve deeper into and expand upon the ideas presented at the collective table, incorporating visuals and creative interpretations, and offering opportunities for further exploration. This ongoing project aims to keep the public engaged in collectively envisioning various possibilities and encourages them to explore these potentials further.
She is looking forward to inviting more people to participate in gameplay as opportunities present themselves.
