The Ecogeoglyphic Observatory visited these places on a blustery day in November. Field Workers met in Boise and drove to Initial Point, where land surveying in Idaho began. This location is significant; the abstraction of land from itself, and into a cartographic scheme, the grid layer, began in this spot. From this point of initial violence, we observed 360 degrees of Idaho, and imagined the northern stretch reaching all of the way to what is called Canada.
From within this intentionally applied framework, it becomes surprisingly easy to find a remove from layers of imposed meaning that organize Idaho’s view of itself. Place names, landmarks, systems of measurement, surveying markers, the ownership of property, and property itself: these concepts become more fallible and insignificant with each new embodied discovery of detail in a landscape. Combined with zoomed-out whole vistas, observed detail and embodied experience builds a sense of localized reality reflective unto itself and its own native qualities.
